Paint the Wind - Pam Munoz Ryan

When her overprotective grandmother dies, Maya leaves California to stay with her mother's family on a remote Wyoming ranch, where she discovers a love of horses and encounters a wild mare that her mother once rode.

I will fully admit that I have NOT read this book, but I think it looks great after viewing the book trailer, especially because I can make a connection. No, my parents weren't killed in a car accident, but I did spend time with horses, on my grandparent's farm in South Dakota. When I think of my grandma and grandpa, I think of how they taught me about taking care of horses and appreciating nature in general. Plus I like how the book trailer leaves you hanging...you HAVE to read the book to see what happens!

I have a question. If someone asked you what a book trailer was, how would you answer them?

i would love to read this book!! but i use to own horses on my grandparents farm because we couldn't keep them at my house. but i visted them all the time! anways one day i was riding my horse shocker and i saw a mountian lion and it tried to atack my horse and i got away and i was okay. then the next morning i notcied my horse shocker was gone! i saw that the barb-wired bence was broken, and i was worried because the mountian lion was still out there somewhere! i told my grandpa and we both went out looking for shocker. we found hime
and he was okay just accopule of marks on his side from the barb-wire. and that is my connection to the story i want to read

That is a great connection, Ashley! And what a grand idea for a longer story, don't you think?!

I just finished the book yesterday and I really enjoyed it. I liked the way it contrasts the two very different homes that Maya lives in. The theme of freedom vs. safety in the book is very thought provoking. This book also makes me want to get out there and ride some horses!

I really enjoyed this book. I am the librarian at Alden Community school and it was my goal to read all the Iowa Children's Choice Award books this summer. I finished the last one on July 1st. What a great bunch of interesting books to read.

Ms. M. and Ms. H.,
Thanks for your comments! I haven't read this book, but I have read some of the Iowa Children's Choice Award titles...I'd love to have read them all like you, Ms. H.! And I would love it if you could leave comments on more of the stories...do you have your students write book reviews or create book trailers? If so, if they are willing, send them to me, and I will post them on the blog...and of course will give them credit!

I read this book a while ago. I though it was really good. I would suggest that other people should read this book. I like how it seems like there are two different books in one!

I love getting recommendations from friends on good books. I think it's the way I find out about most good titles.
